Victoria Falls , A Natural Wonder
On the Zambezi River, which forms the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, Victoria Falls is a breathtaking sight of awe-inspiring beauty and grandeur. ‘Mosi-oa-Tunya’ – ‘The Smoke that Thunders’ – was the name given to it by the Kololo tribe who lived in the area in the 1800s. In today’s modern terms, Victoria Falls is known as the greatest curtain of falling water in the world.
More than 500 million cubic meters of water every minute plummets over the edge, over a breadth of about two kilometres, into a gorge over one hundred meters below, creating columns of spray visible from miles away during the rainy season.
Above the Falls, the Zambezi River is known for its beauty, especially at high water, with rich flora and abundant wildlife on its banks and islands. You have a small piece of paradise when you add the sounds of the river, the grunting of half-submerged hippo, the hauntingly beautiful cry of the fish eagle, and the steady background thunder of the Falls. The renowned missionary and explorer David Livingstone, who discovered the Falls in 1855, was inspired by this section of the river, rather than the Falls themselves, and wrote: “scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight.” The river was envisioned by Livingstone as the route by which Africa would be opened up to Christian civilisation and trade, and he titled it “God’s Highway.” He then went on to name the Falls after his Queen, Victoria.
